Working from home used to be something you might do once in a while if the kids were sick or the office was being fumigated.

But, a certain global pandemic changed all of that.

Now, many of us work from home as a necessity, to run our own businesses, or as a personal work/life balance choice.

Isn’t it great to have that flexibility?

While the idea of working from home is a good one, sometimes it doesn’t always work out in a practical sense.

Working at the dining table or with your laptop on the couch is not always what it’s cracked up to be!

To be successful on your work from home journey, you need a dedicated home office workspace where you can focus and get away from the kids.

Let’s explore exactly how you can create that in your home even if you don’t have a spare room to use as an office.

How To Create The Ultimate Home Office Space

The Results Are In: Working From Home Is Here To Stay

Pre-pandemic, some companies used to offer the ability to work from home as a perk. But it has now become the norm for most businesses.

A study by US research firm Pew Research earlier this year has revealed that the impetus for working from home has shifted considerably since 2020. 61% now say they are choosing not to go into their workplace, while 38% say they’re working from home because their workplace is closed or unavailable to them.

But in 2020? The opposite was true: 64% were working from home because their office was closed, and 36% were choosing to work from home. Sentiment is shifting and many more of us are preferring to work from the comfort of home. So, we need a good space to do it in!

Count The Benefits

Why have so many people embraced the idea of working from home?

Starting with the obvious benefit to employers: 35% of participants in an Otago University Work Futures Otago study found their productivity was similar at home compared to working in the office, while 38% found themselves to even be more productive at home.

The key opportunity survey participants gained from working at home was the removal of the commute to work and the resulting cost reduction. They also appreciated being able to manage their own time. The results also suggest that increased family time was an advantage for many.

Stop Working At The Kitchen Table!

Launched abruptly into working from home by COVID-19 lockdowns, many of us in flexi-work situations have made do with less-than-ideal workspaces at home.

The Work Futures Otago study found that most people already have a dedicated workspace at home (77%), but comments revealed that those who didn’t (23%) struggled with both distractions and health and wellbeing.

So, what can you do if you don’t already have a home office setup? The good news is that you don’t have to make the kids share a room or find a space to squeeze a desk into the living room.

Optimise Your Workspace To Optimise Productivity And Mental Health

Once your Pencarrow Cabins home office space is in place, there are additional things you can do to ensure your workspace works for you. You can create a great space within one of our Small Space cabins – here’s how.

Get the right desk: The bigger, the better. Having a larger desk allows you to spread out and leaves room for extra equipment if needed. You can comfortably fit a big desk inside our 10 sqm+ cabins and Pencarrow Pods.

Get the right chair: Having the right chair will help you with your posture, allow you to focus and provide more energy when working. Test out different chairs and see what’s comfortable for you.

Let the sunshine in: Natural light in a workplace is linked to general wellbeing, better health and increased productivity. Our Small Spaces cabins are installed with full height glass sliding doors and options around windows and joinery.

Jazz it up: Add plants, art, a heater, a fan, a lamp, or a coffee machine. Whatever makes you enjoy being in that home office space, your Pencarrow Cabin can do it – with neutral wall space for décor, ample floor space for additional furniture and full wiring for whatever you need to plug in.
